While the Internet is a window on the world, not all sites are multilingual. It is up to you to translate the web pages needed for your daily life that are not available in your native language. Several solutions allow you to do this directly in your browser. Here’s the procedure.
Translate a web page from Google Chrome
On computer version
The Chrome browser is linked to the Google search engine and Google Translate. It has a translation module to translate an entire web page.
To use it, it’s simple:
right-click on the foreign language page of the site,
select “Translate to French” in the pop-up window.
And back to the original language? Click the source language in the open insert at the page URL.
And to translate automatically?
You can set up machine translation directly in Chrome settings.
Click on the three points that provide access to the browser menu,
Select Settings, then “Languages”,
Tick or untick the words “Offer me to translate pages that are written in a language I don’t know”.
Bonus: You can enable or disable translation for a specific language.
On the mobile version
Chrome, for Android and iOS, has a built-in translation module, with a similar activation approach.
On a foreign language site, click on the three points, then select “Translate”. A box appears at the bottom of the screen: you can change the language or save your preferences. To enable machine translation, follow the same steps as for the computer version of Chrome.
Translate a website: other browsers
On Microsoft Edge
The browser automatically detects the language of a page: to translate it, right-click and select “translate”.
On Safari
By default, Safari is set to automatically translate to your preferred language. In case of malfunction, do an intelligent search and then click on the “translate” button.
You can also install plugins – like TranslateMe – if you want to use a specific tool.
What about your official documents? Choose certified translation!
Website translation: Firefox as an example
Firefox does not have an integrated solution for translating, so you need to download a plugin:
Google Translate,
Reverso Context,
SYSTRAN Translate PRO…
How do I install it?
Go to the extensions page.
In the search bar, choose a plugin.
Click on “Add Extension”.
The search engine requests permission to install the extension: select “add” to validate your request.
To the right of the URL bar, click the extensions icon, and then open the options.
Set the options: your browser is ready to translate!
